BERWICK, N.S. - Nicole Myles and Perry Bruhm are happy to have a hand in getting more youth in Kings County involved in arm wrestling.
The Berwick residents are in the process of recruiting members for a new club that is based out of the Windermere Community Hall. Practices, which are open to all ages, are held Mondays from 6-8 p.m.
“The other clubs in the province are at least a 30-minute drive away, which makes it difficult to take the kids on school nights. We want to teach the kids the importance of practicing and working hard to achieve their goals,” said Myles in a recent interview.
“Having a club they can attend on a weekly basis is a huge help with that. We also want to promote the sport in the community we live in and see this as a great opportunity.”
Myles, the club’s president, is proud to say her 11-year-old daughter, Alyssa Jones, and seven-year-old son, Shawn Foster, already have a nice collection of hardware to show for their dedication to a sport that takes them across the country. Alyssa recently won gold in left arm at nationals in Quebec and Shawn won silver in both arms.
“Members will become a part of the arm-wrestling community, which is like a second family. We offer coaching from some of the best arm wrestlers in the province,” said Myles, who noted that many athletes meet lifelong friends through their involvement in the sport.
“Our club is also unique, and we like to throw special events in the mix. We had a Thanksgiving dinner-practice, pumpkin-carving contests and we will soon have our Christmas Eve practice-dinner.”
The club presents kids with opportunities to socialize, compete, achieve, work hard, travel and have fun. They’ll be hosting a Battlezone tournament at the Michelin Sports and Social Club Jan. 19, 2019.
“Our club started with five members and, in two months, we have seen our numbers grow to almost 20 at some practices,” said Myles.
“We are looking for sponsors and, or, donations from the local community and businesses to help us reach our 2019 fundraising goals.”
