MIDDLETON, N.S. - The Middleton Regional High School Monarchs boys hockey team pulled off a 5-1 win over YCMHS Vikings in Yarmouth Nov. 11 to notch their first win of the seasons in Valley High School Hockey League play.
Yarmouth scored in the first two minutes of the game on the powerplay with Middleton responding with 2:36 left in the frame with ‘Nifty’ Ned Brooks rifling one home on the powerplay assisted by Ray Parsons and Tayler Veinot.
Although shorthanded for much of the second period, the Monarchs played them pretty evenly and with defenceman Cory Johnson in the sin-bin for the final two minutes his forwards bailed him out with two nicely executed powerplay goals -- the first by Riley Connell assisted by Veinot and Logan Gesner and then Brooks with his second goal of the night from Gesner and rookie defenceman Morgan Noble.
For much of the third period the Monarchs carried the play to the Vikings. After five minutes into the third, Veinot upped the count to 4-1 assisted by Ryan Gates and Gesner, and finally with five minutes to go Gates completed the scoring from Veniot giving Veniot a four point night for his efforts. Gesner from the d-line chipped in with three assists.
The win puts the Monarchs at 1-1 in the standings, good for third spot in the western division. Middleton lost to the Vikings in a close 5-4 game Oct. 27 in their season opener.
This weekend the Monarchs are away. A contest against Barrington on Nov. 16 has been postponed, while on Nov. 17 they visit the Apple Capitol against Central Kings.
The Monarchs next home game is on Nov. 24 versus Avon View Avalanche.
