Big Spruce launching beer at Horton Ridge malt house

Beer made entirely from Nova Scotia grown products, including Horton Ridge’s malted grains

HORTONVILLE, NS – A new beer featuring malted grains produced at Horton Ridge Malt & Grain Co and an all-Nova Scotian recipe is set to launch.

Craft beer brewer Big Spruce Brewing has created a new beer called One Hundred, a name which celebrates its creation using water, malted grain, hops and yeast produced in Nova Scotia only, and will launch it Nov. 18 at the malt house, with doors opening at 2 p.m.

It’s a fitting location for it, since Big Spruce was the company’s first malt customer in 2016.

“It represents a homecoming of sorts as this beer returns to the farm and malting facility where the grain was grown and malted,” said Horton Ridge president Alan Stewart.

The malt house is the first business to produce malted grains in Nova Scotia. In 2017 alone, several thousand pounds of malting barley and rye were grown and malted onsite in Hortonville.

Despite the province’s booming craft beer industry, which has seen a significant increase over the past year, a beer has never been made using only Nova Scotia grown ingredients until now.

This new Hundred Years is described as, “dry and approachable, with a flavour profile and floral notes typical of the white beers of Belgium. It has been lightly hopped with organic Challenger and Willamette hops, and the grain bill lends spicy notes due the use of organic malted rye,” according to the event’s release.

The event will also include lice Celtic music and, weather allowing, a food truck.
