The Valley Major Midget Sport Swapper Wildcats wrapped up the 2008/09 Season with their annual banquet last Tuesday, March 31, in Berwick.
Coach Nick Greenough lauded the team’s exploits for the year and presented awards to celebrate standout individual excellence and dedication.
AND, THE AWARD GOES TO…
Goaltending duo Charles Grant and Travis Hall shared the Scott Dee Coaches’ Choice Award, honouring the memory former Wildcat Scott Dee who tragically perished following an on-ice collision during a game in 1987. Scott’s brother Gordon Dee was on hand to present the award which recognizes Grant and Hall’s all-around leadership and talent, both on and off the ice including their strong commitment to academics and the community.
Forward Shayne Sullivan’s grit and focus earned him the nod as this year’s Hard Hat Award recipient. This trophy acknowledges the player who stood out for his work ethic, practicing hard and playing hard week in and week out.
The Unsung Hero Award ironically recognizes the player who does not seek recognition. This year the coaches chose to praise Steve Wakeham as a player who shows up prepared for every challenge, never seeks the limelight although deserving, just gets out there and does his job.
Rookie of the Year honours went to Nick Parker, who missed the early stages of the season thanksto a broken ankle, but returned to quickly find a role on the team. He is a skilled offensive player who, team president Ted Agombar predicts has the potential to be a league-leading scorer in coming seasons, assuming he is not first drafted to higher leagues.
Team captain Colby Harris collected the Top Scorer trophy. Colby notched 15 goals and 28 assists for 43 points in 35 games this year to lead the Wildcats, ranking 6th in league for total points, and 3rd overall for assists. He also caught the eye of hockey scouts, and has accepted an invitation to attend Toronto’s Upper Canada College, Canada’s most prestigious private school, an all-boy boarding school with a long tradition of hockey achievement dating back to the 1880s. Harris, who captained Nova Scotia’s team at Midget Lacrosse Nationals last summer in Calgary, will likely be drawn to the UCC Varsity Lacrosse program as well.
The Wildcats also recognize annually the contribution and achievements of graduating players with the presentation of a Team Watch. This years grads are Wes Booth, Shayne Sullivan, Chad Greenough, and Cordell Perry.
NO REST FOR THE WEARY
Although the banquet marks the official close of the season, there will be no rest for the Wildcats. Along with award announcements comes word that Wildcat Spring Rookie I.D. Camp begins in three weeks: April 21 to May 7 at the Brooklyn Arena. The camp is open to this year’s graduating Bantams and all eligible 15-17 year-olds.
