Tabatha Bent’s goal with 11:48 left in the second period turned out to be the winner as the Western Valley Female Midget AA Vixens edged the Antigonish Bulldogs 2-1 to take the provincial championship Sunday afternoon in Middleton.

Bent got help from Stefani Banks and Emma Stennett on the game-winning marker, but it was Megan Hudgins, with help from Courtney Balcome, who got the Vixens on the scoreboard less than five minutes into the game, setting the tone for the contest that had the Western Valley team dominating for much of the contest. Megan Chisholm scored the lone Antigonish goal at 1:16 of the third frame.

Although the Vince Bazinet-coached Vixens ended up with the gold, they went into the championship game in second place after winning against Halifax, Cole Harbour, and Acadia, but losing to the tough and fast-paced Bulldogs.

Rebecca Sweet of the Cole Harbour was named tournament MVP, while the Vixen’s Tabatha Bent was named top goal scorer. Vixen Megan Hudgins took sportsmanship honours, and Laura Bray of Antigonish was top goaltender. Best defenceman was Haley MacDonald of Antigonish.

The All Star Team included Western Valley Vixen Kate O’Brien (goal), Halifax’s Elena Tsitouras (forward), Acadia’s Cailyn Byers (forward), Cole Harbour’s Lyndsay LeBlanc (forward), Antigonish’s Haley MacDonald (defence), and Acadia’s Brianna Graham (defence).
