Monarchs notch three shutouts on road to provincial hockey final

The Middleton Regional High School Monarchs girls ended up with second place at Nova Scotia High School Division 2 Provincials Sunday in Middleton, losing 7-0 in a hard-fought battle with Dr. J.H. Gillis Regional High School Royals.

Although they lost championship game, the Monarchs had beaten the Royals 1-0 on Saturday and headed to the final with a perfect 3-0 record and three Maddie Reeves shutouts.

Middleton made it to the final with a 2-0 win over the West Kings Wolverines at noon on Friday and an 11-0 win over the Hants East Tiger at 6 p.m. that evening prior to the opening ceremonies.

The Dr. J.H. Gillis girls earned a spot in the final with a 16-0 win over Hants East and a 5-0 win over West Kings on Friday, and a 4-2 win over West Kings on Saturday.

Monarchs coach Keith Veinott said defeating the Royals 1-0 Saturday morning was like poking a bear, with the Antigonish girls coming back Sunday ready to play.

Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil, Middleton Mayor Calvin Eddy, and a NSSAF representative welcomed the teams to the ice during the opening ceremonies. It was the first-ever Division 2 Provincials, and while the Monarchs played to the Division 2 level, technically MRHS is a Division 3 school.

Third place went to West Kings with a 7-4 win over Hants East.
