A pair of Valley boxers will compete for gold medals Feb. 25 at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax.
Matt Whitford, 16, of Kentville and the Evangeline Trail Amateur Boxing Club advanced to the gold medal final in the 91 kg division with a 17-4 decision over Richard Horth of Quebec in the semifinals Feb. 24. Assured of at least a silver medal, he is scheduled to box Alberta’s Brandon Cardinal for gold.
Meanwhile, Cyrus Taylor, 16, of Middleton and the Pegasus Amateur Boxing Club reached the gold medal match in the 69 kg division. After opening with a knockout of his B.C. opponent Daniel Lambert Feb.23, Taylor met Luke Holland of P.E.I. in the semifinals. A close match ended with both boxers having scored seven points. A countback of the five judges gave the bout to Taylor by a 15-14 margin. Also assured of at least a silver medal, Taylor is scheduled to meet Ontario’s Luis Valdivia for the gold.
Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m.
