A 48-year-old Digby area woman is dead after her car crashed head-on with a truck on Boxing Day, December 26, just west of Bridgetown on Highway 101.
Annapolis RCMP said the crash happened at about 3 p.m. when the woman’s west-bound mid-size car hit the east-bound truck in the truck’s lane of travel. The truck was a roll-off vehicle used for hauling fish. It’s lone occupant suffered minor injuries. The woman, the only person in the car, died at the scene.
Police said Monday that weather and road conditions were probably not a contributing factor in the crash. Two Annapolis RCMP members, along with Annapolis Valley Traffic Services were at the scene of the crash, along with firefighters, Emergency Health Services, and the Department of Transportation.
The truck came to rest in the snow up against a guard rail which may have prevented it from rolling down a steep incline.
Bridgetown firefighters received the call at about 3:10 p.m. and quickly blocked the highway at Centrelea and called on Annapolis Royal firefighters to block the road at Lequille until the Department of Transportation could take over at Exit 22.
Bridgetown firefighter Mike Lockett said there was a lot of debris on the highway, plus a lot of diesel fuel, all of which was cleaned up by DoT.
Bridgetown firefighters were on the scene in case of fire, but were also the ones to extricate the woman’s body from the vehicle.
The car was heavily damaged, particularly on the front driver’s side.
The highway was closed until about 9 p.m. as police investigated and the vehicles and debris were eventually hauled away.
Police said the cause of the crash is still under investigation and the vehicles have been impounded for inspection.
At the request of the family, RCMP were not releasing the woman’s name.
