A Nictaux couple is homeless after a late afternoon fire destroyed their home despite the efforts of local firefighters to quench the blaze.
Steve Morse said at the scene that neither he nor his girfriend Judy Adams were at home when the fire started. He said Adams arrived home to smoke, went to a neighbour's house and immediately called 911. Morse was at work when she contacted him and he arrived minutes before the house burst into flames.
Flames shot through the roof at the height of the fire which destroyed not only the old home, but an attached rec room and outbuilding. Morse remained on the scene as firefighters arrive from Middleton, Lawrencetown, and Bridgetown to assist the Nictaux and District Volunteer Fire Department.
A tanker relay was set up and firefighters climbed a ladder to spray water into the upper floor of the storey-and-a-half home. Later firefighters entered the building in breathing apparatus and appeared to have retreived a small strongbox or safe.
Morse said this morning that the home was insured. He stayed with a relative overnight.
Security was on the scene overnight and the fire marshal was there this morning. Morse said the fire appeared to have started in the rec room just off the back of the house and spread to the main structure. He said he first suspected that a pellet stove might have caused the fire but was told this morning that it was probably electrical.
