Lawrencetown Legion Branch 112, celebrated the 65th anniversary of the Allied Forces’ invasion of Normandy, France June 6 at the village’s cenotaph.
The event was organized by George Grant and the service conducted by June Thompson.
Legion Chaplain Earle Leslie reflected on the sacrifices made by Canadian and other allied soldiers in the D-Day invsion that turned the tide in favour of the allied countries during the Second World War.
He painted a vivid picture of the troop landings and the fear and emotional turmoil soldiers must have felt in performing their duties to protect their countries and democracy.
He described those who gave the ultimate sacrifice as now being outside the circle of time.
The Canadian 3rd Infantry Division and the Canadian 2nd Armoured Brigade were part of the major landings on June 6, 1944. The first wave of Canadian soldiers suffered 50 per cent casualties, but by the end of the day had successfully landed 15,000 troops and were the only country to reach their D-Day objectives.
The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division had penetrated further into France than any other Allied force.
