Starting this weekend, Annapolis residents can get a step up in their winter fun and fitness with the county’s popular snowshoe treks.
Brian Orde, of the county recreation department, says seven snowshoe treks have been planned this winter between January and March to get people out and enjoying the snow again. Keji may be closed, but there are many parks and trails still open for the public to explore.
The outings are taking place at a few of the county’s most spectacular outdoor spaces, including Tupperville Falls, Valleyview Park, and Mickey Hill trails.
“Snowshoeing is a great way to exercise and explore Annapolis County in its winter beauty,” says Orde. “Snow is no fun to drive in, but it’s great for snowshoes. We’re hoping for lots of snow this year.”
Snowshoeing is a safe, low-impact activity that is great for the whole family, he said. It develops mobility, balance, and works all of the major muscle groups.
This program was very popular two years ago and attracted large numbers of all ages. Last year it was less successful, but the open winter made it poor for snow sports, he added. If there’s no snow on the day of the event this year, the outings will still take place as scheduled but will be a hike, he added.
The Treks
All treks will be at least three to five kilometres and approximately two to 2.5 hours in length. Participants can bring their own snowshoes, or borrow a pair from the recreation office. Throughout the county, recreation departments will have a selection of snowshoes available for individuals, families, or other groups to loan for a period of time.
“It’s a great way to try a pair of snowshoes to see if you like this winter sport,” he said. The snowshoes come in a range of sizes and types, so anyone shopping for snowshoes should stop by the recreation office first to see the types and sizes that are available.
Orde added that generally snowshoes are sized according to weight ranges and types of snow. Hard, icy snow requires the gripping power of cleats, while softer, denser snow needs a larger shoe to more evenly distribute the weight.

There are also a few pairs available through the county office in Lawrencetown at 584-2255.
