With the holidays over, it’s time to start a new chapter for a healthier 2013.

Wendy Rodda says she’s belonged to TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) since she was 17. She’s attended groups in Greenwood, Nictuax, Chester Basin, Truro, Lunenburg, and now she’s starting a new chapter in Middleton.

This weight-loss support group was started over 50 years ago and unlike fad diets, this approach has proven to work, she says. Each member weighs in (privately) once a week to determine the progress from the previous week.

“We ask members to consult with a heath professional such as a dietician, or doctor to set their weight goals, so it fits their bodies and lifestyles,” she said. “The group is open to both men and women. Children as young as seven can join. “

The goal of TOPS is to encourage members to lose weight over time by developing healthier lifestyles through portion control and regular exercise. She added this approach is not about taking away foods, but being conscious of what types and how much food is being eaten each week.

Memberships are $30 to join and then monthly dues are paid to cover expenses. Unlike other weight loss programs, it’s not necessary to buy special foods.

TOPS groups motivate their members with contests, and other fun activities to help the members learn more about proper portion size and exercise for their body type.

Anyone wishing to join the new Middleton chapter is invited to weigh-in at 8 a.m. on January 4 at the New Holy Trinity Church.  Rodda says they want to start bright and early so that everyone can weigh in before work.

Having the weigh-ins on Fridays gives members a bit of a break over the weekend before getting back to the weekday routine, says Rodda. Each week they’ll be given a package to help them reach their goals.

Once a year, there is a Provincial Recognition weekend that honours the members who lost their weight in the previous year or have taken time to lose their weight to a goal weight.

“This is your chance to make a New Years resolution that will take you to a healthy weight,” said Rodda. “Just think, a pound a week lost, and you would weigh 52 pounds lighter by December 2013. “
