This Friday, Dr. Bob Maher, the Ingeonuity Centre and Annapolis Digby Economic Development Agency will host one of their most prestigious Tech Social speakers to date when Dr. Michael Goodchild presents his talk "California Reality and Nova Scotia Dreaming."

Dr. Michael Goodchild is considered by many to be the father of Geographic Information Science. Currently a professor of geography at the University of California’s Santa Barbara campus, he is also the director of space@ucsb and chairs the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis, an organization which focuses on issues relating to US Homeland Security.

Goodchild has published more than a dozen books and some 350 scientific papers, and supervised dozens of Ph. D students who have themselves gone on to contribute greatly to the development of the field. Along with honorary degrees in Canada and the UK, Goodchild has made a veritable collection of prizes and honours such as the Prix Vautrin Lud, a Founder's Medal from the Royal Geographical Society, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Environmental Systems Research Institute, and Educator of the Year from the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science.

Dr. Maher -- himself a recognized figure in the field -- describes this talk as "a rare chance to meet one of the leaders in the Geographic Sciences" and points out that Goodchild is credited with coining the term Geographic Information Sciences... It's worth noting it isn't that common to meet someone who can boast having named his own field of expertise. *****
