YADONG GUAN

Born in Beijing, Yadong Guan has been studying the pipa (a traditional lute-like Chinese instrument) from the age of seven. Since winning first prize in the China’s National Art Student Contest in 1996 she has been touring as a virtuoso performer. Beyond her facility as a soloist in the classical Chinese repertoire, Yadong Guan is also a master of traditional Western music. Accompanied by cello and guitar she rangess from Vivaldi and Debussy to the folksongs of Quebec and Ireland. A unique offering at an unbeatable price.

Motus O Dance Theatre performs

CARMINA BURANA

The Spring Performing Arts Series draws to a climactic close at Kings with a stunning production of Carl Orff’s monumental Carmina Burana. Motus O combines elements of theatre and dance to produce a multimedia maelstrom of sound, video, costume, performance and movement. A total theatre experience splashed across a backdrop of one of Western music’s most breathtaking explorations of the sacred and profane: a piece so powerful it somehow escapes Rickard’s Red ad spoofs unscathed. (Choral fans take note: The music is pre-recorded.)

IN BRUGES (Rate R, 107 min)

A high action, darkly comic buddy film that earned Colin Farrell a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. A spiralling plot sees hit men Ray (Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) ordered to lay-low in Bruges after Ray botches his first job by killing an innocent child. As Ray, wracked by guilt, descends into a series of bizarre encounters, Ken receives the order to knock off his protégé. Ken finds Ray on the verge of suicide and fatefully decides to stop him and attempt to convince boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes) to accept his own life in exchange. This fateful decision triggers a life-and-death battle pitting Ray and Ken against Harry as the film twists toward a Faustian climax.
