Pictou County country music star George Canyon recently picked up a three-year stint with the Canadian Military as Honorary Colonel at 14 Wing Greenwood.
Minister of National Defense Peter MacKay, also from Pictou County, appointed Canyon to the honourary position on December 12,
The title carries many responsibilities such as developing, promoting, and sustaining strong community ties, assisting in hosting parades and other Wing functions, fostering esprit de corps and establishing and maintaining liaison with the Wing’s charities and associations.
Born and raised in Nova Scotia, the country star has always been an ardent supporter of the military and all of the hard work that its members do.
“It is an unbelievable honour to be appointed to this position and I look forward to interacting with the men and women of 14 Wing Greenwood on a more personnel basis for the next three years,” said Canyon.
“We are absolutely thrilled that George has accepted the position and with his strong community background and work with charities, I have no doubt that he will be a wonderful addition to our military family,” said Wing Commander, Colonel Derek Joyce.
A formal ceremony will be held at the Wing on February 21, 2008 to formalize the appointment and give Canyon an opportunity to officially meet the military personnel of the base.
The announcement of Canyon’s appointment was made public on January 9.
